What should a local business post on TikTok? We sorted 120 viral TikToks by idea

12 min readBy Arian Khavari, Founder

A local business should post TikToks with people on camera: staff and customers behind the scenes, an expert answering a customer question, a skit about a moment every customer knows, or a reply to a comment or review. In 120 business TikToks that beat their own account's median views, those person-led videos had a median of 56.3 times the account's usual views, against 19.7 times for tours, product shots and montages.

How did we sort 120 TikToks by idea?

The videos come from our open outlier dataset, the one behind our short-form video statistics, and you can download it as a CSV. Each is a TikTok posted in September or October 2026 that beat the median views of the account that posted it. That ratio is the outlier multiplier: a video at 50x did fifty times what that account normally does.

There are 15 from each of eight industries (real estate, car dealerships, barbershops, med spas, restaurants, gyms, dentists, home renovation), English captions only, at least 10,000 views, one per creator. Creators are not named, and every hook below is our paraphrase.

We read all 120 hooks and gave each video one idea type. That is our judgement, made from short descriptions, so the edges are soft. A gym owner filming a reply to a one-star review could count as behind the scenes. We called it a reply.

One correction matters more than the rest. Multipliers fall as accounts grow: TikToks from accounts under 10,000 followers had a median of 159.8x here, while accounts between 100,000 and a million sat at 13.7x. So we also scored every video against TikToks from accounts of a similar size. A score of 1.0 means typical for its size.

Which TikTok ideas beat their account, adjusted for account size

120 business TikToks, September and October 2026. 1.0 is typical for an account that size.

People, behind the scenes Expert explains Skit or joke Transformation Reply or reaction Walkthrough, showcase Customer or creator review Loop or montage 1.0 = typical for its size 2.61 1.57 1.31 1.16 1.14 1.08 0.74 0.63

Trust the top and bottom of this table more than the middle. We ran the size correction five different ways, from follower bands to a version that compares each video only with its own industry. People and behind the scenes came first in every follower-based version. Montages finished seventh or eighth every time, and walkthroughs did too in four of the five. The four types in between swapped places with the method, and with 9 to 27 videos each, those swaps are noise.

Why did videos with a person in them beat tours and product shots?

Group them and the gap is plain. The four built on a person (behind the scenes, expert explainers, skits, replies) add up to 51 TikToks with a median of 56.3x, and 22 of them cleared 100x. The 32 walkthroughs, product shots and montages, where the space or the product carries the video, had a median of 19.7x. Six cleared 100x.

Some of that is account size. The product-led videos came from bigger accounts, a median of 216,600 followers against 76,400. After the size correction the gap shrinks but holds: 1.31 against 0.75.

A second cut points the same way. In 24 of the 120, our hook or the published report names the person as someone who works in the trade: a barber, a dentist, a salesperson, a gym owner, a contractor on their own account. Those 24 had a median of 135.1x against 29x for the rest, and led in three of the four account-size bands. Treat 24 as a floor; plenty of the others were probably made by people in the trade too.

Why? This is our read, not a measurement. TikTok's own explainer of the For You feed (June 18, 2020) says recommendations run mainly on each viewer's own interactions, plus details in the video such as captions and sounds, and that neither follower count nor a history of hit videos is a direct factor. A person saying something gives viewers something to answer or send to a friend. A slow pan across a showroom gives them much less.

We have seen the same split in our own work, on Instagram rather than TikTok. Four videos we made for one Vaughan dealership, same account and same team, ranged from 125,100 to 23.6 million views. The top three were comedy with the staff as the cast. The lowest was the one where the cars were the reveal, which our case study calls an inventory video in costume.

Which TikTok ideas should a local business try first?

In the order we would try them, with the strongest example of each.

1. Put your staff and customers on camera

The largest multiple in all 120 was a staff member walking a dealership floor, asking colleagues one question: what is the highest car payment you ever sold? Every answer is a face, a number and a car. 5.8 million views, 2,819 times the account's normal. A day-four recovery diary after a CO2 laser treatment did 417x from 3,100 followers.

Pick one question and ask everyone in the building. Film a customer's first visit, with their permission.

2. Answer the questions customers ask at the counter

The top dental TikTok ran six seconds: a dental professional with a fork, showing how the tongue should move while eating. 4.1 million views from an account with 773 followers, 2,793x. An aesthetician narrating a green sea peel for 96 seconds did 1,779x from 2,100 followers. A dentist explaining how to whiten at home instead of getting veneers did 1,018x.

That last one tells viewers what they do not need to buy. Advice that costs the business a sale is the advice people believe.

Most were not short: the 20 expert videos had a median length of 65.5 seconds, against about 20 for skits and transformations. More in our TikTok length breakdown.

3. Film the moment every customer recognises

A real estate agent with 906 followers filmed kitchen cabinet doors that open onto nothing. Ten seconds, 1.3 million views, 1,435x. A car salesperson playing both sides of an angry phone call did 245.7x. None of it needed actors. The odd detail in a listing or the call every salesperson has taken is the material.

4. Show the result, and let someone doubt it first

Transformations were the most common winner, 27 of the 120, including 12 of the 15 renovation TikToks. But their median, 38.4x, sits barely above the set's 35.5x. A plain before and after is everywhere.

Two of the top three opened with a doubter. "Eww, you bought a used double wide" did 2.3 million views at 2,504x. "Trust the vision, they said," over an outdoor kitchen build, did 1,358x from 1,300 followers.

5. Reply to comments, reviews and other videos

Replies had the highest raw median, 122.6x, but came from smaller accounts, so they sit mid-table after the correction. They are still the cheapest idea here. A gym owner filmed a playful confrontation with the member who left a one-star review, then showed the fix: 1.9 million views. An orthodontist reacting to botched braces did 182.1x from 9,000 followers. Your comments and your Google reviews are already a list of scripts.

6. If you post a tour, lead with the number or the oddity

Tours and product shots are what most businesses post first, and they had the second-lowest median, 21.1x. Real estate leaned on them hardest: 8 of its 15 TikToks. The breakouts put something surprising on screen early. A modular home walkthrough with the payment on screen did 4.4 million views at 499.5x, and an eight-second deep-fried hot dog did 759.1x.

7. Make it easy for local creators to review you

Seven of the ten creator reviews were restaurants, almost half of the 15 restaurant TikToks. The biggest, 1,741x, was a local creator reviewing a small Chinese buffet. You cannot post that yourself, but you can be the place a reviewer wants to film. Of the restaurant TikToks we can tie to the restaurant's own account, the standout was the owner holding a takeout container to the lens, half shouting "listen when we tell you": 306x.

8. Keep montages for filler

Beat-synced compilations, ASMR loops and 3D animations were the weakest type: a median of 18.7x, a size score of 0.63, and one of 11 above 100x. They look polished, which is why so many accounts start there. In this data they rarely travelled.

What does TikTok's own rulebook say a business can post?

Three rules from TikTok's own pages, checked October 19, 2026:

  • Reposts carrying another logo lose For You reach. TikTok's For You feed eligibility standards (released August 25, 2026, in force from September 24) make reused content without creative edits, "such as clips that show someone else's watermark or logo", ineligible for the For You feed. Upload the clean export, not a file saved from another app.
  • Business accounts use the Commercial Music Library. TikTok's help page (last updated July 2025) says businesses cannot use the general music library for commercial use.
  • Followers are not the ticket. The 2020 explainer says follower count is not a direct factor, and accounts under 10,000 followers had the highest median of any size band in our data, 159.8x.

How do we turn this into a month of TikToks?

One shoot day becomes 12 to 16 finished videos for Reels, TikTok and Shorts, with first drafts inside 48 hours. Every month we pull the TikToks beating their own account's median in your industry and build the shot list from what is working there now. Each TikTok gets its own edit rather than a reposted Reel. A format that beats your median gets a sequel; one that does not gets cut. That is how our TikTok work runs.

Read the table as a starting order, not a ban list. The TikTok we feature on our own site is a brand film for Autopia Cars built on wheel shots, a private jet and drone passes. It reached 2.41 million views, organic, with no ad spend from us (the case study). Showcase videos can win. They win less often, which is why we would not build a month on them.

Doing it yourself? Make your first ten three people videos, two expert answers, a skit, a transformation that opens with the doubt, a reply to a review, a tour that leads with the number, and a sequel to whichever did best. Then judge each against your own median with the outlier calculator.

Frequently asked questions

What should a small business post on TikTok?

Videos with people on camera: staff and customers behind the scenes, an expert answering a common question, a skit about a familiar moment, or a reply to a comment or review. In 120 business TikToks that beat their own account's median views, those videos had a median of 56.3 times the account's usual, against 19.7 times for tours, product shots and montages.

What are good TikTok content ideas for a local business?

Ask everyone on staff the same question and film the answers, answer the question customers ask most, or show a result with the doubt in the hook. The top TikTok in our data, at 2,819 times its account's median, was a dealership staff member asking colleagues about the highest car payment they had sold.

Is TikTok banned in Canada?

No. When the federal government ordered TikTok's Canadian business to wind up in November 2024, it said it was not blocking Canadians' access to the app or their ability to create content. On March 9, 2026, after a further review, the Minister of Industry announced that TikTok's Canadian business can carry on under new legally binding undertakings on data and minors.

Not freely. TikTok says businesses cannot use its general music library for commercial use and should use the Commercial Music Library, which is cleared for organic posts and ads. Most ideas that did best in our data are carried by someone talking, so missing a trending song costs less than owners expect.

Do you need followers to go viral on TikTok?

No. TikTok says follower count is not a direct factor in its recommendations. In our dataset, TikToks from accounts under 20,000 followers beat their own median by 147.7 times at the median, against 15.8 times for accounts over a million followers.

Should a business repost its Instagram Reels on TikTok?

Post the same shoot, but upload a clean file and cut it for TikTok. TikTok's For You feed rules exclude reused clips that show someone else's watermark or logo, and our TikTok vs Reels comparison found the winning edits looked different on each platform.
