Reel outlier
calculator.

Is that video actually a hit, or just a normal day for your account? Paste your recent view counts and find out how far any video beat your own median. Nothing you type leaves your browser.

Outlier multiplier = a video's views ÷ the median views of the account that posted it. It is the number behind every Viterno monthly report and every free Breakdown, because it measures the idea instead of the follower count.

One per line. 12.4K and 1.1M work too. The example numbers are made up so you can see how it works; replace them with yours.

What the
number means.

Below your normalUnder 1x

The video under-performed your own median. Not a failure, just data.

Normal1x to 2x

Right around what your account usually does.

Strong2x to 5x

Clearly better than usual. Worth making another in the same format.

Outlier5x to 20x

Something in the idea or the first seconds travelled beyond your usual audience.

The idea carried it20x to 100x

Reach this far past your median is not about your follower count. Study it and repeat the premise.

Breakout100x and up

The algorithm pushed this far outside your audience. Rare, and the best lesson your account has.

These bands are our rule of thumb from running this on client accounts every week, not a platform standard.

A worked example

Our own numbers.

Across the 14 Viterno Group client videos with a public view count, the median is 1,335,000 views and the average is 3,803,928. The average is 2.8 times the median, because a handful of big videos pull it up. That gap is why we never judge a video against an average.

Measured against the whole catalogue, our biggest video is 18x the median and our smallest is 0.09x. For your own account, measure against your own median: that is the only comparison that tells you whether the idea worked. Each of these videos has its own case study.

Why the median

Averages lie
about video.

Short-form views follow a power law: most videos land near an account's normal and a few land very far above it. One viral post can make an account's average look three or four times higher than anything it usually does, which makes every normal video look like a flop. The median ignores that pull. It is the middle video, which is what a typical post really does.

We wrote about this in detail, with our own client data, in one video was 46% of everything.

FAQ

Questions.

What is an outlier multiplier?

It is a video's views divided by the median views of the account that posted it. A video at 10x did ten times what that account normally does. It removes follower count from the comparison, so a small account and a large one can be judged on the same scale.

Why use the median instead of the average?

Short-form views are extremely uneven. One viral video can drag an account's average far above what a typical post does, so the average stops describing anything real. The median is the middle video, which is what "normal" actually looks like for that account.

How many videos should I include?

Use your last 10 to 30 posts on one platform. Fewer than 10 makes the median jumpy; going back more than a few months mixes in an audience you no longer have.

What is a good multiplier for a Reel?

As a rule of thumb, 2x to 5x is a strong video, 5x to 20x is an outlier, and above 20x the idea carried the video rather than the audience. In our monthly reports, the biggest outliers in a niche often run from 100x to over 1,000x, usually from small accounts.

Does this work for TikTok and YouTube Shorts?

Yes. The maths is the same on any platform. Just keep each calculation to one platform, because the same video can perform very differently on Instagram and TikTok.
